Oh man! I've really enjoyed this series. Have always wondered about the great wall. Thanks to you, I don't have to expend MY energy to see it. Great pics, thanks for sharing them! My knees had sympathy pains for you, those stairs are incredible!
How come you didn't go? Those stairs are just calling you. Beautiful. I would not have been able to resist, no matter how long it took me to get up there. Absolutely beautiful!
Found out today this is on top of the train station at the airport. It apparently is for decoratin only. Must have been way under budget or something.
From the side it looks just like the shape of the space ship from "My Favoirte Martian."
(well, you know I only saw the re-runs of that show)
Wasn't too bad to this point. But by the time we got up to the next tower (visible in the background) we were pretty sweaty. That's why I have my hat on in that picture, as my hair was pretty wet. Had to dry off a bit in the slight breeze that was blowing before we were photo-worthy.
Notice the people sitting down on the steps in the pic. They're not doing that for the view!
this is only one out of just a few sections of the wall that is kept in repair. It hasn't been needed for defence since just after the Ming Dynasty - about 600 years ago (if I recall the guide's briefing on it), when the next General - soon to be Emporer fell in love with a girl from the other side and then just let the Mongols in. the wall was obsolete 20 minutes later.
